NTAG 223/224 DNA for Anti-Counterfeiting and Smart Packaging

NTAG 223 DNA and NTAG 224 DNA are security-focused NFC integrated circuits from NXP Semiconductors. When built into a properly designed NFC label, tag or card, they can help brands connect a physical product to a digital authentication experience using AES-128-protected Secure Unique NFC (SUN) message authentication. For a reliable smart-packaging project, however, the chip must be matched with the antenna, package construction, data configuration and verification service.

Shenzhen Kaisere Technology supports OEM customization for NFC cards, tags and labels, including chip selection, product construction, printing, NDEF encoding and packaging according to agreed project requirements.

Important: These are IC-level reference specifications, not guaranteed finished-label or finished-card performance. The IC requires an antenna to communicate. Read distance depends on antenna geometry, field strength, tag dimensions, card or label construction, the reader or phone and the operating environment. NXP's data sheets state an operating distance of up to 100 mm under applicable conditions; this should not be presented as a guaranteed read distance for every finished product.

How Does NTAG 223/224 DNA Support Product Authentication?

A conventional QR code or static NFC URL can provide product information, but the visible code or static link may be copied. NTAG 223/224 DNA adds a cryptographic message-authentication mechanism to a configured NFC interaction. With SUN enabled, the chip can mirror its UID and NFC counter into the NDEF message and generate a CMAC protected by an AES-128 key. A compatible verification service can validate the message before returning a result.

1. Assign a product identity. Define how each tag will be associated with a product record, batch or serial number in the brand's data system.

2. Configure and personalize the chip. Confirm the selected IC, NDEF structure, SUN settings, memory-access permissions and secure key-provisioning process before encoding.

3. Read the dynamic NFC message. A compatible NFC-enabled phone or reader reads the configured NDEF data. The SUN message can include the UID, counter and AES-128 CMAC.

4. Validate the message. The brand's application or backend checks the cryptographic message using the relevant protected key material and applies the project's product and scan rules.

5. Return the appropriate experience. The service can display an authenticity result and, where configured, product information, warranty details, care instructions or brand content.

The chip is one part of the solution. Authentication software, secure key management, tag personalization, product-to-tag binding and operational rules must work together. A static NFC URL by itself is not the same as cryptographic SUN verification. A URL-based experience may open in a mobile browser without a dedicated app on supported phones, but the actual user journey must be tested on the target devices and operating systems.

Which NFC Format Fits Smart Packaging?

The same chip family can be integrated into different physical formats. The right choice depends on the available space, package shape, attachment method, visual design and how the customer will interact with the product.

Format

Typical integration

Project considerations

NFC label

Adhesive label applied to a carton, bottle, case or product surface

Label dimensions, antenna layout, face stock, adhesive, print finish and removal behavior

NFC tag or inlay

Integrated into a hangtag, insert, product component or packaging structure

Available space, mechanical protection, placement, antenna tuning and converting process

NFC smart card

Authentication, ownership or warranty card placed inside the product package

Card size, thickness, substrate, printing, personalization and NDEF encoding

For packaging that needs a direct tap point on the product, an adhesive NFC label may be appropriate. A hangtag or insert can be suitable when the packaging structure does not allow a label on the main product surface. A card can work as an accompanying authentication or ownership credential, but it is not a substitute for a tag physically attached to the product when item-level attachment is required.

NTAG 223 DNA or NTAG 224 DNA: What Should Packaging Buyers Choose?

Both ICs support AES-128-protected SUN message authentication. The choice is not simply a comparison of which chip is “more secure”; it depends on the memory and access-control requirements of the project.

·Consider NTAG 223 DNA when 144 bytes of user memory are sufficient and 32-bit password protection meets the project's memory-access requirements.

·Consider NTAG 224 DNA when the project needs 208 bytes of user memory or AES-128-based three-pass mutual authentication for protected memory access.

Allow for the actual NDEF layout, mirrored SUN fields and any data reserved by the configuration. Confirm the final memory map and reader/backend workflow before mass encoding. For a detailed chip comparison, seeNTAG 223 DNA vs NTAG 224 DNA: Which Chip Should You Choose?.

Smart Packaging Applications for Secure NFC

Luxury Goods and Accessories

An NFC label, embedded tag or accompanying card can connect a handbag, watch, accessory or collectible to product information and a configured authenticity-checking service. Packaging and attachment design should make the NFC touchpoint easy to locate while supporting the brand's presentation.

Cosmetics and Beauty Products

Smart NFC packaging can link skincare, perfume and beauty products to batch-related information, product instructions, campaign content or an authentication workflow. Bottle curvature, liquid contents, decorative metallic layers and label placement should be checked during prototype testing.

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Packaging

NFC can provide an additional product-identification and information channel for medicine packaging, healthcare products and supplies. Any regulatory serialization, patient-safety or track-and-trace requirement must be designed and validated as part of the wider system; an NFC chip alone does not establish regulatory compliance.

Electronics and Automotive Components

Secure NFC identification can link devices, accessories or original components to support information, service records or product verification. Metal housings and nearby conductive materials may affect antenna performance, so the final installation needs a suitable antenna design and validation.

Wine, Spirits and Premium Consumer Products

A label or closure-area tag can provide a digital touchpoint for product origin information, brand engagement or a verification service. The packaging team should decide whether the NFC element also needs a separate physical tamper-evident feature.

Packaging Design and NFC Compatibility: What Must Be Tested?

Good chip selection does not remove the need for antenna and package validation. Before approving a design, review the complete assembly rather than testing an inlay in isolation.

·Package material: identify paperboard, plastic, glass, liquid-filled containers, metal foil, metallic inks, conductive layers and any nearby metal components.

·Antenna dimensions and placement: confirm that the coil fits the label or package and that the intended phone or reader can couple with it in the final position.

·Product geometry: test curved bottles, small containers, recessed surfaces, folded cartons and the actual distance between the tag and the phone.

·Adhesive and physical durability: define whether the label is permanent, removable or tamper-evident, and test the finished label against the expected handling and storage conditions.

·Reading performance: test representative smartphone models and dedicated readers with the final package, product contents and multiple tag orientations.

·Authentication workflow: verify NDEF content, SUN generation, backend validation, key management, error handling and the user-facing result.

Metal close to the antenna can detune or weaken NFC coupling. Liquids, package shape and tag placement can also change the reading experience. An anti-metal construction or ferrite layer may be needed for some installations, but it must be engineered and tested for the actual product. Do not quote a fixed read distance until the finished configuration has been validated.

Cryptographic authentication and physical tamper evidence are different functions. SUN helps a configured system verify the authenticity and integrity of the NFC message. A destructible or void-forming label can show evidence of removal. Specify those features separately unless the exact chip variant and configuration has been confirmed to provide electronic tamper sensing.

What Information Should You Provide for a Custom NFC Packaging Quote?

To evaluate a custom NTAG 223/224 DNA project, buyers should prepare the following information:
